Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the phonetic dimensions of emotional speech through a qualitative analysis of prosodic features. The corpus consists of selected segments from The Oprah Winfrey Talk Show, in which speakers spontaneously express a variety of emotions. Anchored in both phonetic and pragmatic perspectives, the analysis focuses on key prosodic parameters including fundamental frequency (f0), speech rate, intensity, duration, and the use of pauses. Particular emphasis is placed on pitch accents as described within the ToBI framework, a model based on autosegmental-metrical phonology. The study aims to identify prosodic patterns associated with emotional expression in relatively spontaneous speech, and to examine the extent to which pitch accents and shifts in both local and global f0 values align with specific emotional states. The findings suggest that prosodic cues vary notably across emotionally expressive speech segments, with such variation depending on the type of emotion conveyed.
