Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to determine the musical characteristics of folk songs (Türkü) from the province of Hatay composed in the Uşşak, Kürdî, and Sabâ Makams, in order to contribute to a more systematic and comprehensible academic evaluation of Turkish Folk Music (THM) works and the classification of their modal structures. In this regard, the study demonstrates that the modal scales and related terminology employed in Classical Turkish Art Music (TSM) can serve as an appropriate framework for the analysis and description of the musical characteristics of Turkish Folk Music, through examples representing the Uşşak, Kürdî, and Sabâ Makams categorized in the Hatay repertoire. Vocal and rhythmic works from the Hatay region included in the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) Turkish Folk Music Repertoire were analyzed in terms of their modal scale characteristics. As a result of the analysis, 26 pieces were identified within 11 different modal scales. Among these, examples composed in the Uşşak, Kürdî, and Sabâ Makams were examined in detail, and a systematic analysis was conducted on a phrase-by-phrase basis. The analyses and musical characteristics of a total of four folk songs—two in the Uşşak Makam, one in the Kürdî Makam, and one in the Sabâ Makam—are presented in this study.
