Summary/Abstract: The interest in the theory and practice of essay writing in this article stems both from its status as an argumentative text, whose creation requires specific competencies in accordance with the state academic standards in literature education during the first and second high school stages, and from the steady trend in recent years for high-school graduates to choose to write an essay when sitting their state matriculation examination in Bulgarian language and literature. The article synthesizes key research insights and findings related to major deficits, prejudices, and misconceptions regarding essay writing. The research focuses on the relationship between essayistic and literary competencies – a relationship arising from the universal nature of interpretation as a cognitive operation, which in turn fosters the development of critical thinking and the formation of a wide range of competencies. A specific empirical collection serves as a basis for reflection, namely a collection of essays written by twelfth-graders from specialized high schools. These essays were analysed according to several clearly traceable criteria related to the use of literary examples in the argumentative structure. The observations confirm the perception that the skills of integrating the literary and essayistic competencies have significant educational potential which should be developed.
