Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses a part of the work of Simo Matavulj and Laza Lazarević through which the two authors can be brought into a mutual connection. These are Matavulj's Belgrade Stories and two of Lazarević's short stories, "Vetar" and "Švabica". The paper will discuss the intertwining of the eras of realism and symbolism in the works of the aforementioned authors, as well as what the two of them were the initiators of. Through the analysis of ten of Simo Matavulj's short stories, his view of contemporary Belgrade is followed, the characterization he attributed to the people he met or knew, the problems and difficulties he had the opportunity to see or experience. The two short stories by Laza Lazarević function as points of reference to which he returned again and again when he found phenomena, themes and motifs that were elaborated in a similar way by Matavulj as by Lazarević. Also, the differences between the mentioned authors are mentioned, according to which they are authentic creators of our literature. The emphasis is also placed on the characterization of the symbolist type of hero, as well as on the influence of psychology in the literary work.
