Summary/Abstract: The Transylvanian Saxons see their own culture as “Western” and “German” and believe that their ancestors were cultural pioneers with missionary power, who, with their cultural superiority and spiritual strength, contributed decisively to the Europeanisation of south-eastern Europe and for a long time played the role of “antemuros” and defensive fortress of the West. An honest German people, but also loyal citizens of the state to which they belonged, the Saxons have shown tenacity in preserving their cultural heritage and a remarkable ability to adapt to new situations. Adaptation and selective assimilation have been the real creative force behind the Saxon cultural activity. The great phenomenon of Saxon emigration after 1989 changed the regional identity, and the departure of the Saxons from the Transylvanian villages represented a loss of identity that irreparably affected the multicultural and multiethnic character of Transylvania.
