Summary/Abstract: As an employee of the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography, I became preoccupied with the study of Transylvanian Romanian traditions and with finding a balance between conservative traditions and social progress within a liberal-democratic society. The present paper presents the perspectives of several Romanian and internationl philosophers, ethnographers and sociologists concerning the archaic man, his traditions, customs and everyday manifestations through art. The focus falls predominantly on the Romanian peasant and the traditional Romanian village, in comparison with the American farmer/worker and American settlements, on traditions and social customs preserved and transmitted from generation to generation, but keeping an open eye towards the communitarian future and social progress.
