SEMANTİC FİELDS AND USAGE FEATURES OF IDİOMS FORMED WİTH THE WORD ‘BAŞ’ İN TURKİSH

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine idioms formed with the word “baş” in Turkish from semantic, structural, and cultural perspectives. Based on a survey of the Turkish Language Association’s Contemporary Turkish Dictionary and Dictionary of Idioms and Proverbs, it was determined that the word “baş” carries multifaceted metaphorical functions within idioms. The findings reveal that “baş” in idiomatic expressions does not merely denote a body part, but is also associated with concepts such as authority, value, significance, responsibility, obedience, and self-sacrifice. In this regard, idioms containing “baş” constitute a significant lexical resource that reflects the cultural values, perception of hierarchy, and historical memory of Turkish society.
