Summary/Abstract: The grammars written during the Tanzimat kept on playing a significant role for the development of the Turkish language by the end of the first half of the 20th century. A substantial part of these grammars were written by use an innovative method which placed the foundations of the modern Turkish grammar. Undoubtedly, the grammars written in Latin and Cyrillic were of great importance for the historical development of contemporary Turkish. In their studies, the researchers of language development often use grammar and dictionary texts mostly transcribed in Latin. A considerable number of Ottoman (Turkish) grammars and language textbooks were written at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Quite naturally, studying and teaching Turkish by the Bulgarians allowed them first of all to take advantage of the existing business opportunities in the Ottoman Empire and gave them a chance to take governmental positions. That brought to the development of a number of practical Turkish grammars and dictionaries facilitating the studying of Turkish. The available works are a good source demonstrating the history of the Turkish language and its development at all levels. They show the specific features of the language and its development trends. The article discusses these publications and the features of the spoken Turkish i.e. the pronunciation patterns of the age. This enables researchers to determine the specific features and trends in the language development. In this respect, a comparison is made between the spelling in Cyrillic and Latin of Turkish words written in Arabic in order to outline the Turkish language pronunciation during that period.
