Summary/Abstract: The self-constructed in the freedom or quasi-freedom of private space (during exile, for example) will nourish encounters in the public sphere and vice versa: it is a spiral movement in which each space feeds off the other. Similarly, and significantly integrated into the overall picture of prominent personalities who have a significant impact in both spheres, are the areas addressed by emotional intelligence theorists: the intrapersonal component or personal competence and the interpersonal component or social competence. These two components or competencies are symbiotically merged in the whole person thanks to the bridging competencies of adaptability and self-regulation, with the final self ultimately finding its place in society precisely because of what has been developed within the private being. Drawing on general research on the private/public sphere (Habermas, 1990; Kilian, 1997), as well as research studying the place of women in this dialectical relationship (Primi, 2006, Reus and Usandizaga, 2008, Corbin, Lalouette and Riot-Sarcey, 1997), our article focuses on one of the representatives of the voices of freedom (Winock, 2002) of the 19th century, who left the margins of Europe to express her aspiration for political and historical change and whose name is rarely mentioned in the works cited. Our article aims to explain the conditions under which this Moldovan woman (Romania did not exist when she was born) was able to become a player in European public and political life, both concretely, through her actions, and symbolically, through her words.
