Summary/Abstract: Our paper aims to present some particular aspects concerning the contributions of the Romanian translations from Victor Hugo’s writings in the first half of the 19th century, for the evolution of the Romanian literary language towards modernity. By attentively reading Constantin Negruzzi’s translations from Hugo’s Ballades and by using referential dictionaries, we have identified and analyzed the neologisms introduced by the Romanian translator, of which the greater part has been preserved in the Romanian vocabulary. These aspects represent an incontestable proof of the important role played by translators and translated texts in the stage of substantiation of Romanian literary language on modern bases.
