Summary/Abstract: The establishement of a collaborative approach between Cultural Studies and Translation Studies allows the specialists to speak of the “cultural turn” in Translation Studies (I.Even-Zohar, A.Lefevere, Susan Bassnett) and to see translated texts as “cultural capital”, marked not only by the time and place the source texts belong to, but also by the times and the cultures they become a part. Our paper aimed to investigate the ways in which romanian culture constructed and still constructs its own image of Victor Hugo and his works, with special regard to his masterpiece Les Misérables. This image involves criticism, reference works and translations in romanian, all these aspects working together. We emphasized translations from Hugo’s novel, as long as translations function often as original for most people in a target culture.
