Summary/Abstract: Emerging from a landscape increasingly shaped by visual culture, this study explores how primary‑school learners develop visual literacy and reading comprehension through carefully designed multimodal educational activities. The project investigates how picturebooks, as rich visual–verbal artefacts, can cultivate children’s ability to interpret meaning created through colour, gesture, composition, perspective and symbolism. Supported by the Slovak Recovery and Resilience Plan, the research builds on systemic functional linguistics and visual design grammar to construct tools for diagnosing and enhancing children’s multimodal interpretive skills. In its initial phase, the project established a set of instruments to measure visual literacy, followed by an intervention consisting of sixteen educational activities implemented across diverse school environments. These activities targeted the integration of visual and textual cues, encouraging children to engage analytically and creatively with picturebook narratives. Preliminary findings indicate that systematic, intentional work with picturebooks significantly strengthens children’s capacity to perceive and interpret visual components as equal contributors to meaning-making. The project also highlights the value of combining qualitative and quantitative methods, enabling a nuanced understanding of multimodal comprehension development. Ongoing analyses aim to deepen insights through techniques such as eye‑tracking, which will illuminate children’s real‑time perceptual processes. Ultimately, the project aspires to produce scholarly studies, a monograph, and a teacher’s methodological guide that together promote effective multimodal literacy instruction in primary education.
