Summary/Abstract: This study explores focalization and ocularization strategies in contemporary picturebooks for children and their significance in developing interpretive skills among young readers. Through the analysis of visual and verbal narration in Voices in the Park (Anthony Browne), The Lion Inside (Rachel Bright, Jim Field) Grumpy Monkey (Suzanne Lang, Max Lang), and The Bad Seed (Jory John, Pete Oswald), the paper highlights diverse approaches to narrative perspective and visual representation. Central to the analysis are the ways in which the characters’ gaze, mediated through direct visual contact with the reader (demand image), camera angles (low and high angle), and shifts in narrative focalization, shape children’s reading experiences. The research demonstrates that these strategies foster empathy, emotional insight, differentiated perspective taking, and a deeper understanding of character behavior. Visual perspective is thus not merely an aesthetic choice, but a meaningful tool for engaging young readers in the interpretive construction of the stor yworld. The study further argues that the use of focalization and ocularization holds significant pedagogical potential for developing visual literacy and interpretive competence within primary education.
