Summary/Abstract: In the article, the authors, based on the analysis of a number of sources and publications, analyze the development of the higher education system, focusing on the training of professional teachers for secondary schools from 2015 till 2020 with its features and trends. In particular, it is shown that the modernization of the secondary school teacher training system in higher education institutions involves: ensuring the quality of specialist training in accordance with European standards; formation of professional competence and social responsibility in the process of training future specialists; improvement of the content of university education (educational-professional and educational-scientific training programs) in accordance with modern requirements; introduction of modern educational and technological support of the educational process; ensuring the appropriate level of knowledge of state and foreign languages; preparation for the life of an active personality capable of effective life activities in the 21st century. and personal self-development; establishment of a system of employment of university graduates for work by profession; and increasing the importance of Ukrainian education. While researching the topic, the authors also identified the features of university education: universality and significant demand for university knowledge; mastering the values of the innovative university education system; freedom of teaching and learning; diversity of scientific activity; providing opportunities for the diligent students to obtain scientific degrees and become teachers. The authors considered the policies of Ukraine regarding the training of the specific subject teachers. In particular, in recent years this tendency led to the increase of the number of universities and financial support of the educational institutions. It is also worth mentioning that one of the problems of training specialists in higher education is the admission to higher educational institutions.
