Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the use of speech acts in dental medical discourse, analyzing how dentists and patients talk through pragmatic tools. Drawing on John Searle’s theory, we examined a few dentist-patient interactions in a dental office in order to emphasize the prevalence of the speech acts and the findings reveal a predominance of directive and assertive acts during the dental treatments and during consultations. Besides, this article highlights the need and the recommendation for the dental care providers to introduce more often expressive and comissive acts in their medical discourse for a pragmatic adaptation to patient’s anxiety and to improve the trust and cooperation.
