MARITIME EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN SOUTHERN UKRAINIAN LANDS (LAST THIRD OF THE 18th – 19th CENTURIES)

Summary/Abstract: Based on the analysis of historical sources and scientific literature, the justification of the importance of the development of Ukraine as a maritime country is presented. The historical experience of the establishment and operation of maritime (military and civilian) educational institutions in the South of Ukraine is analyzed, without taking into account the creation of an effective system of modern maritime education in our country. The system of maritime educational institutions in Ukraine began to be created at the end of the 18th century, training specialists in both the naval and merchant shipping fields. The appearance of maritime educational institutions in the southern Ukrainian lands in the last third of the 18th - at the beginning of the 19th centuries. was determined by several important factors of both historical and economic nature. Maritime educational institutions in the south of Ukraine existed in the form of cadet classes, schools, schools for training specialists for commercial seafaring. After the reform of the maritime education system (in the 1970s), qualitative changes were observed in the training of specialists for work at sea. For a long time, maritime schools in southern Ukrainian lands were the only educational institutions in the region; they trained specialists for manning the teams of military and commercial vessels of the Black Sea Fleet; trained specialists were also used in administrative and management positions of the region, in various departments of the Maritime Ministry.
