THE IMAGE OF BARCELONA IN CATALAN MEMORY LITERATURE: CUANDO ÉRAMOS CAPITANES. MEMORIAS DE AQUELLA GUERRA BY TERESA PÀMIES

Summary/Abstract: This study aims to offer a different perspective from the usual narrative on the Civil War or a gender-based reading of Teresa Pàmies's literature – approaches that dominate the scarce scholarship dedicated to her – by highlighting the central role of the city of Barcelona and the testimonial value of the author's memoirs. In addition to defining the identity of Barcelona by examining its palimpsests during the civil war, as reflected in Teresa Pàmies's work, we are aiming to examine the way in which the author (re)constructs her identity through her memories of the city that surface throughout various passages in the book. By taking into consideration the possibility of going beyond a stereotyped view of the writer and placing her in a more contemporary field of study, we seek to underscore her relevance within the broad sphere of Catalan literary memorialism.
