Summary/Abstract: The article demonstrates that the novel “Resurrection” by Leo Tolstoy makes a significant contribution to the tradition of the 19th century Russian novel by highlighting the social realities of the time. In addition, the novel enters the great debate about the relation between tradition and progress. According to Tolstoy’s hero, progress represents a radical transformation in the human being and in the community it belongs to, as a result of it regaining its feeling of compassion and returning to its traditional values. Our approach is based on topical literary models, classified as “literature that heals” (Gefen 2017) and “literature as intervention” (Gefen 2021). Moreover, it investigates the way in which Tolstoy highlights the social worlds, the collective imaginary, the dramas and the dilemmas of his own era, making use of the conventions of Realism, as well as introducing new elements of modern fiction.
