Summary/Abstract: The novel “The Empusium” condenses cultural and literary traditions, mythological and folkloric references, the framework of Olga Tokarczuk's aesthetic program and both recurring and original features of her writing. In this paper, we examine the literary and mythological sources that shape the text and conduct an analysis based on its nature as a hypertext. After identifying the attributes of the Greek empousai, we proceed to examine Olga Tokarczuk's reinterpretation of this figure, identify the levels on which it emerges in the text, and highlight the symbolism it acquires in the novel.
