Summary/Abstract: In the context of solving a range of problematic issues related to the quality training of applicants for the degree of doctor of philosophy in a higher education institution, the research attention is focused on the phenomenology of research and investigation activities. As a result of the scientific discourse, it is stated that the construct “research activity of future doctors of philosophy” is mostly on the periphery of researchers' scientific studies; the available works that directly or indirectly interpret this phenomenon cover it in the plane of one of the means of improving the efficiency of the educational process in a higher education institution. It is stated that the organization and stimulation of future doctors of philosophy research activities should not be considered an end in itself, since it is an essential component of a competitive specialist's professional training system. The article analyzes the scientific status of the concepts of “independent work” and “independent research work” in the context of the comparative effectiveness of higher education in shaping the legal understanding of applicants for the degree of doctor of philosophy, taking into account the current national realities and European integration preferences of Ukrainian society. The article outlines the prospects of such a plane of comprehension of the problem: the research activity of future doctors of philosophy is an essential factor in their self-realization in the profession, and therefore, in guiding the process of determining the individual educational trajectory of applicants, it is fundamentally important to develop such activity fully.
