Summary/Abstract: The article is based on editions, literature, and archive documents from the Roman archives. It deals with a distinguished French Church historian Noël Alexandre (1639–1724), a member of the Dominican Order, whose work was a cornerstone of Church historical science from the end of the 17th until the close of the 19th century. Born in Rouen, he attended Dominican colleges where he learned philosophy and theology. He practiced what he had learned there for his whole life. Owing to his Gallicanism he conflicted with Pope Innocent XI but he was finally granted a pardon by Pope Benedict XIII. Alexandre is almost unknown in the Czech culture. For that reason, I will attempt to put this renowned scholar into the context of Church Historiography in the 17th and 18th centuries. I will also pay attention to the Maurists and the Bollandists, as well as the Dominican historiography itself.
