Verifications of Ruthenianness: Kievan Orthodox Historiography and the Metaphor of Unity (Selected Cases)

Summary/Abstract: This study explores historical metaphors that shape Kievan Orthodox historiography. The works of Meletius Smotrytsky, Theophan Prokopovich, and George (Konissky) are analysed with particular attention given to the metaphor of state-confessional unity, which underpins their historical narratives. This metaphor – visible in medieval Ruthenian historiography – under the influence of political and confessional changes in Central and Eastern Europe was subject to a constant process of (de)construction.
