Summary/Abstract: The present article provides an overview of major international socio-demographic surveys and the information they contain regarding paid leaves for childcare (maternity, paternity, and paid parental leave). Several European and international studies have been analyzed, which more often reflect attitudes towards parental leave than its actual use. The review shows that international surveys more frequently record attitudes toward paid childcare leave than the actual experiences and behaviours of respondents. Тhe sample design usually includes individuals aged 15 or 18 and over; therefore, only a small number of participants are actually using parental leave at the time of the survey. This limits the possibility of outlining a more detailed socio-demographic profile of parents using different types of paid leave for childcare and identifying their needs. The article also includes an overview of international databases, highlighting the difficulties in comparative analyses related to the different definitions and terminology used for parental leave in different countries, and the need for their harmonization. In international databases, information about parental leave among specific groups of parents is also limited - for example, by the structure of the family, parental education, household income, etc.
