Summary/Abstract: The proposed analysis situates the history surrounding the construction of the Vasil Levski monument in Sofia in the context of the two major narratives that shaped public discourse in the years following the Liberation: the narrative of Bulgaria's medieval glory and that of the Revival. The text presents the construction of the monument as a transitional period in which the two narratives gradually replaced each other through various socio-political uses, festive and memorial celebrations, thus explaining the long delay in opening the memorial site dedicated to the national hero. The article also draws attention to how the 130th anniversary of the monument is honored in public life today, identifying through several examples the institutional oblivion of the date October 22, 1895.
