Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the anniversary “1300 years of Bulgaria” and explores the uses of the historical past as a symbol for legitimizing political power. The text presents a kind of ‘guide to the use’ of culture and cultural heritage in the period of the imposed communist ideology after 1944. The analysis examines the question of how socialist society recognizes the past through the prism of a new ideological component, strictly defined and regulated. The events of the old times are refracted, if necessary, modified and presented to the audience, through the necessary angles in understanding the overall value models that meet the conceptual requirements of the imposed authority. Thus, the past, heritage - tangible and intangible, movable and immovable – is examined, studied, excavated, preserved, recorded, transmitted, archived, but previously thoroughly examined and cleared to provide capacity for ideologically sound constructions. All this is most clearly evident in the time of Lyudmila Zhivkova.
