Summary/Abstract: Štefan Krčméry (1892–1955) was an exceptionally complex creative personality. In addition to his literary work and editorial activities, he was involved in Matica slovenská and other associations. He organised literary and artistic life in Martin, often with a nationwide reach, ranging from theatre and music to the development of museums and the search for archival documents. He wrote a handbook on organising historical, archaeological, ethnographic and archival research for non-specialists, as he anticipated that the new political conditions following the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 would increase public interest in researching and learning about history. When writing medallions about Slovak writers and when drafting the history of Slovak literature, he took into account literary situation in historical time and space. In the political sphere, he was unsuccessful with his proposals for administrative reform and the election of the new capital city for Slovakia. He devoted his primary interest to literature and literary history, but his writing style, factuality, tendency to link the creation of specific literary works with historical events, and efforts to capture the atmosphere of the time made his works and reflections interesting to historians as well.
