Elements of the cultural landscape of The Netherlands in Tabula complectens totam Belgicam… by Matthias Zündt

Summary/Abstract: The cultural landscape of the early modern Netherlands bears traces of man’s constant struggle with the element of water, in the form of flood embankments, drained polders, and canals. It is characterized by meandering rivers, reshaped islands, and a coastline subjected to the pressure of the North Sea. Already in the 16th century, it displayed an anthropogenic character, intensified by a dynamic urbanization, which in provinces such as Flanders, Brabant, and Holland reached nearly 40%. This article presents results of an analysis of a map published in 1568 by Matthias Zündt of Nuremberg – particularly the copy held in the collections of the Jagiellonian Library. The main research questions concern the inspirations and models on which the Nuremberger relied, as well as selected elements of the cultural landscape – hydraulic and military constructions, and city views.
