Summary/Abstract: The rather large number of manuscripts (12 in total) produced within a short span of ten years after the death of Nil Cabasilas and the publication of his treatise On the Procession of the Holy Spirit (1363–1373) attests to the strong impression that Nil Cabasilas’s work made on his contemporaries. On the one hand, this is evident if we consider the substantial size of Nil’s treatise. On the other hand, the difficulty and cost of producing copies—given the excellent quality of most of them—lead us to conclude that Nil’s work, through his much better-known nephew, Nicholas Cabasilas, received considerable support from the Byzantine Church, which felt threatened by Emperor John Cantacuzene’s ‘unionist’ policies.
