Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issue of understanding patriotism in Poland after 1989. It presents an outline of the idea itself, attempts to promote it in free Poland, and places particular emphasis on the socio-cultural space of its implementation. Reference is made to the categories of myth, pride and shame as significant for formulating a specific vision of patriotism. The research uses the analysis of source texts, scientific studies, cultural phenomena, and also applies the method of interviews and observations of environments involved in promoting patriotic stances. The conclusions suggest that this task is carried out by many organizations and non-governmental initiatives. The idea itself is subject to significant redefinitions, which is conditioned, among others, by geopolitical and social transformations. The young generation seems to present a different understanding of patriotism, constantly searching for new contexts and so-called “positive myths.” The last element carries a special educational value, which may contribute to the dissemination of patriotic stances and the unification of society.
