Summary/Abstract: Ion Cunțan is born on April 14th 1923 in Sibiu and he comes from a familywith a long musical and literary tradition: Dimitrie Cuntan – professor, composer and conductor; Elena Cuntan – his daughter, was a canto teacher; Maria Cuntan – a Samanatorism (Romanianliterary current) poetess, direct ancestor of Ion Cuntan. He started his musical studies in Sebes, between 1938 and 1940 having Nicolae Lupu as his teacher. He followed the military high schoolin Iasi where he also continued his musical studies which he finished at the Private Conservatoryfrom Sibiu, between 1945 and 1950 and at the Conservatory from Bucharest between 1956 and1960. He created and conducted more than 50 choral groups; he picked-up musical folklore in 100notebooks; he was a teacher for 35 years. His creation includes both secular and religious songs. From the religious works, written when he was old, it is worth mentioning The Canticles of the SaintLiturgy and the Christmas Carols. He dies at Onesti on May the 22nd 1998.
