Summary/Abstract: The Lomovete valley is distinguished by an exceptionally high concentration of rock hewn monasteries. Eminent Bulgarian researchers, who have made significant contributions to their study have, at times, reported the destruction of certain monastic sites or their constituent elements – such as frescoes, and inscriptions – which, in fact, have survived to this day. Notable among them are a rock-hewn church near the medieval fortress of Cherven; an inscription in the Gramovets Monastery on the Cherni Lom River; a depiction of a saint in the burial chamber of the Great Nisovo Monastery on the Mali Lom River; and a donor portrait in the so-called“Buried Church” within the Ivanovo Rock Monastery of St. Archangel Michael, situated on the Rusenski Lom River.
