Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to conceptualise the materiality of the archive as a specific epistemic challenge. The author argues that the material dimension of every archival collection is fundamentally important for a broad range of both practical and theoretical approaches within the so-called archival turn. The article distinguishes between the categories of actual materiality and metamateriality to highlight the complexity of materiality issues, illustrated with detailed examples from Maria Dłuska’s archive. In conclusion, the author draws an analogy with Jakobson’s notions of context and code to propose which modes of engaging with the archive’s materiality may be most valuable for literary research.
