Summary/Abstract: At school schoolchildren are encouraged to learn self-dependently therefore the learning plan and content become of much importance. Particularly a strong need for independence manifests at university as here students are instructed how to learn and required an appropriate level of independency. Having started studies at university the ability to act independently, i.e. to learn independently, is lacking. Problem. The independence level of learners who have started their university studies is very different. It is important to analyze the manifestation of independent activity level that makes influence to further learning success and learners’ activities. Object – manifestation of university students’ independent activity. Aim – to clarify the attitude of 1st and 2nd year students of social sciences towards the manifestation of independent activity at university studies. Research question: how much does the attitude towards the manifestation of independent activity at university studies differ among the 1st and 2nd year students of social sciences? Objectives: 1. Review the concepts of independence, independent personality and independent learning. 2. Determine the level of independence predominating at bachelor studies. 3. Single out the learning / teaching theories which dominate at university social science studies. 4. Evaluate the attitude towards the independent activity in study process of 1–2 years students of social sciences. Methods – analysis of literature resources and documents, documents content analysis, questionnaire, exploratory research. Statistical date processed with MS Excel program and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 16.0. Vilkokson criterion, values averages were applied. Data was statistically processed using the method of descriptive statistic. The empirical research helped to reveal that the opinion upon the independent activity at university studies is different among the first and second years students. Therefore it is relevant to pay a considerable regard to the development of basic competencies which are very important and necessary for learner as they impact his / her activity and leaning success at university studies.
