Summary/Abstract: Ion Iliescu was not merely the first president of Romania after 1989; he was the figure who took control of the Romanian anti-communist revolution and redirected it into an anti-Ceaușescu movement. He assumed the role of tempering revolutionary demands in such a way that the Communist Party (PCR) ‘elites’ could remain in power. This article argues that Ion Iliescu’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the current democratic and civic shortcomings in Romania, despite the fact that 21 years have passed since he completed his final presidential term. In pursuing his objectives, Iliescu employed disinformation, manipulation, and informational warfare against the Romanian people. The consequences of these actions continue to shape Romania’s political and social landscape today, forming a troubling legacy.
