Unpublished documents of the Bulgarian Royal Consulate in Skopje on the bombing attack carried out by the IMARO in Shtip in 1911 and its consequences

Summary/Abstract: At the end of November 1911, the revived Internal Macedonian Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (IMARO) carried out its first major act of sabotage in the series of the so-called ‘donkey attacks’, i.e. the bombing attack in Shtip. The result was a bloody crackdown against the Bulgarian population in the town. The tragic event caused a wide public and political resonance not only in Bulgaria, but also across the Ottoman Empire. The present publication contains previously unpublished reports by the second secretary (in reality military attaché) of the Bulgarian Royal Consulate in Skopje. They are addressed to the Headquarters of the Bulgarian Army. The information contained in these documents supplements the information already known from diplomatic reports, but also provides some new details about the Shtip massacre.
