Summary/Abstract: In 1913, the Rusyn scholar Oreszt Szabó, who, prior to World War I, held the post of a high civil servant at the Hungarian Home Office, published the book ‘A magyar oroszokról. (Ruthének)/About Hungarian Russians (Rusyns)’, in which he describes the life of the poor Rusyn population. He did so with the aim of gaining the support of the Hungarian government circles in order to improve the position of Rusyns in Hungary. In the book, he not only reveals the weaknesses of the Rusyn population, but also seeks a way out of their unenviable predicament. He sees a solution in the Germanization of Rusyns.
