Summary/Abstract: Although the laws were regulating the life of convicts in detail, in order to secure their existence and protect them from possible abuses, the reality of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was quite different. The situation in the prisons of the Kingdom presents a reversed illustration of Yugoslav society. Poverty, backwardness and the floated bureaucracy were widespread. The treatment of prisoners was depending from the personality and the character of the warden and the guards. In contrast, the political prisoners were treated with relative sensitivity.
