Summary/Abstract: Poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) is the oldest narcotic plant used by human society. The best known and the most important alkaloid contained in poppy is morphine. It was the first alkaloid isolated from a plant (1803). In some countries, poppy is grown illegally for opium extraction, while other countries grow poppy for the legal processing of poppy straw for the isolation of alkaloids or for seed that is further used in the culinary - or for both. In the Czech Republic poppy is grown exclusively for seeds for food purposes. Poppy is shrouded in many myths.
