Melami Sufism: An Ideological and Historical Development

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the ideological and historical development of Melami Sufism, from its earliest known manifestations to the “Bosnian” Melamet of the twentieth century. What distinguishes and characterizes Melami Sufism in contrast to other Sufi orders in Bosnia and the Balkans? Methodologically, the paper relies on available literature, particularly concerning Melami teachings and practices throughout past centuries. In the case of modern Bosnia, the study draws upon interviews with members or witnesses of the Melami way of life, as well as manuscript materials, including both original texts and their translations.
