Summary/Abstract: In these chaotic times, stress is a part of daily life for more than one human being. Many scientists are devoted to research on the topic of stress. Chronically dealing with stress may lead to a variety of stress-related diseases or even the death of an organism. Traditional medicine has been used to treat weakness for centuries. Despite thousands of years of usage of herbs with adaptogenic properties, the term adaptogen was introduced in the twentieth century. Since then, interest in adaptogenic herbs has been increasing, not only among users but also among researchers. This work introduces the reader to the problematics of stress and adaptogens, demonstrates the situation in the Czech market, describes the effects of adaptogens caused by biologically active substances and characterises popular adaptogenic herbs.
