A Portrait of the Critics as a Young Man. On the rediscovered book 'Sztuka na metry' by Marcin Giżycki

Summary/Abstract: This article describes selected elements from Marcin Giżycki’s biography and writing legacy as an art and film critic. This was done on the basis of surviving press materials, the critic’s private archive and the book Sztuka na metry, found in 2023 and unpublished during his lifetime, which is an interesting record of the time not only in the intellectual biography of the then thirty-year-old Giżycki, but also for the study of art and criticism of the late 1970s in communist Poland. By reviewing the articles included in Sztuka na metry, the distinctive features of Giżycki’s later writing on art are well evident. In addition, an attempt is made to answer the question of why Giżycki did not publish Sztuka na metry.
