SYNTACTIC PROCESSES USED BY AI ASSISTANTS IN TRANSLATION – A CASE STUDY OF CURRENT NEWS ARTICLES

Summary/Abstract: This piece of research, quite practical in nature, aims to present and comment on the manner in which current news articles, notably from American publication “Politico”, are rendered into Romanian by AI-powered translation platform MachineTranslation.com, as well as by Microsoft’s AI assistant, Copilot. Therefore, a comparative perspective will be adopted, focusing not so much on the translations and their quality, per se, but rather on the syntactic processes used by the two tools, attempting to glean and infer conclusions as to certain preferences in terms of phrasing, processes (how are nominalization, passivization, the use of that-clauses, etc. treated when moving from one language to another), noun phrases and their complexity, and other such aspects.
