(RE)TRANSLATING THE MAGIC OF ROALD DAHL: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE ROMANIAN TRANSLATIONS OF THE WITCHES (1993 VERSUS 2003 VERSUS 2014)

Summary/Abstract: This article aims to first build a theoretical framework comprising the main features of children’s literature and profile of the target readers, while also focusing on retranslation, more precisely Antoine Berman’s ‘Retranslation Hypothesis’, as well as some features of Roald Dahl’s unique style. Employing a comparative perspective and referring to Andrew Chesterman’s classification of translation strategies, as well as to Antoine Berman’s classification of ‘deforming tendencies’, I will then perform translation analysis whilst looking at relevant excerpts from the Romanian translation (1993) and retranslations (2003 and 2014) of Dahl’s The Witches (1983), commenting on the translators’ preferred strategies, as well as on the overall orientation of the translation (source versus target-oriented), thus also testing the validity of Berman’s (in)famous Hypothesis.
