Summary/Abstract: The National Committee of Hungarians from Czechoslovakia (NCHC) was founded in the early 1950s to represent the interests of Hungarians in Czechoslovakia, particularly concerning their human and minority rights. The organization remained active for over half a century, undergoing several internal transformations before continuing its work as the National Committee of Hungarians from Slovakia in 1995. This study focuses on the period when the NCHC was advocating for Hungarians in Czechoslovakia as a distinct political and cultural community, with a particular emphasis on its activities between 1984 and 1994. During this time, the NCHC submitted multiple memoranda to international organizations, kept U.S. policymakers and organizations informed about human rights violations affecting the Hungarian minority, specifically the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, the UN Commission on Human Rights, the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and the U.S. State Department. The study concludes that the NCHC played a crucial role in the international advocacy for Hungarian minority rights in Czechoslovakia. Its work remains a vital subject for further research, as it provides key insights into the foreign policy strategies of the Hungarian minority and their efforts to shape international perceptions of minority rights in Central Europe.
