Summary/Abstract: Around the year 330 AD, the Christian poet Gaius Vettius Aquilinus Juvencus put the Gospel into dactylic hexameter, creating the first biblical epic in literary history. His work, Evangeliorum libri quattuor, is not merely a paraphrase of the New Testament but also a theological adaptation of the Gospel to contemporary dogmatic disputes arising from the Arian heresy. This analysis examines how the spread of Arianism influenced the theological content of Juvencus's epic, focusing on passages he might have omitted due to their potentially pro-Arian meaning. The relevance of the poet's omissions to the Arian controversy is established through the study of Arius's epistles, the Nicene Creed, and anti-Arian treatises by Athanasius of Alexandria and Hilary of Poitiers. In addition to potentially pro-Arian passages omitted, the study also considers those passages Juvencus preserved.
