Summary/Abstract: Phenethylline, known as "Captagon," is a popular stimulant, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. Its popularity is linked to socio-economic disparities, unemployment, and the need for alternative income sources. The article examines the origin, synthesis, chemical, pharmacological, and toxicological properties of phenethylline, its use as an illegal drug, and its analytical control in biological and seized samples. A case study of drug dependence and its connection to international terrorism and armed conflicts is also included.
