Summary/Abstract: The study concerned large post-mining areas of Wałbrzych which, after the liqui¬dation of mines, are gradually undergoing the process of revitalisation. It also concerned the changes in the economic base and the spatial-functional structure of the town. Large post-ar¬eas are waste land which, could be adapted for public areas. In the recent 10 years Wałbrzych has been undergoing transformation on a scale never seen before. Liquidation of the mines has led to numerous spatial, social and economic changes. Immediately after the fall of the mining industry, it seemed that Wałbrzych existed without any perspectives, without the will to use its potential and that it was doomed to fail. Wałbrzych is still an important economic centre. The post-mining pit shafts are the best known symbol of Wałbrzych and should always exist in the landscape of the town and remind of its roots.
