Summary/Abstract: The text addresses the phenomenon of the abuse, neglect and undermining of the dignity of older people (EAN) in residential care homes for older people in the Czech Republic. We analyse the occurrence of various types of EAN in care homes for older people and memory care units based on a questionnaire survey of employees (N = 973) at these facilities conducted at the turn of 2024 and 2025. A high proportion of respondents had either on an exceptional basis or repeatedly witnessed different types of violence, inappropriate behaviour, abuse or neglect, with emotional and psychological abuse and neglect being identified as the most frequent events. From the perspective of the staff, violence and ill-treatment towards clients is most often perpetrated by other clients, and to a lesser extent by the relatives of clients. Respondents also reported various types of elder abuse and neglect by their colleagues, almost 40%, and even by themselves (10%). The observed incidence of EAN in residential care homes indicates that in terms of prevention, it is not enough to address individual cases as individual failures, but rather to adopt the appropriate management practices for determining more systematic solutions and a more comprehensive perception of the breadth and depth of this issue.
