Summary/Abstract: In 2024, in one of the concluding remarks of his acceptance speech for his fifth Doctor Honoris Causa title from a European university (this time from the West University of Timișoara, following previous honors from universities in Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest, Fribourg, and Lisbon), Professor Vlad Constantinesco stated: “A question arises here: is it sufficient to build relationships between sovereign states solely through law and economics? Governments can change their stance after elections; public opinion enjoys challenging what is legislated in Brussels, what is judged in Luxembourg or Strasbourg. National identities remain strong, and the acceptance of all consequences of European law is not yet guaranteed by a deep sense of belonging that would confer it authentic legitimacy.” I write these few lines upon the professor’s departure to the heavens, at a historic moment when the Romanian electorate is being asked, among other things, to affirm the legitimacy of its belonging to an authentic European identity.
