Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the current development of the procedural status of employees with concern to labour disputes, and concentrates particularly on current trends regarding accessibility to, and the costs of, legal proceedings. In this context, the author reflects on the legislative changes with respect to the abolition of the involvement of lay assessors in labour dispute proceedings and the introduction of single-judge decision-making on 1 January 2025, and increases in fees for the provision of legal services following the amendment of lawyers’ charges effective from the same date. The article highlights a number of aspects concerning the new system of legal proceedings in labour-related issues, which, in the absence of the participation of lay assessors and the introduction of single-judge decision-making, may potentially lead to increased pressure for employees to be represented by legal professionals. The author calls for a debate on the potential for the introduction of corrective measures concerning the structure of legal fees and the rules covering the reimbursement of legal costs, which could partially compensate for the latest changes in this area and which, unlike comparable jurisdictions in other EU member states, have not yet been introduced into domestic legislation.
